The Fellowship of Christ

For the early church, fellowship was not just something that occurred by accident. They devoted themselves to it in the same way that they devoted themselves to teaching of the Word, the Lord’s Supper, and to prayer.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (Acts 2:42)

For the early church, arriving 5 minutes late and leaving 5 minutes before the end of a service wasn’t an option! Fellowship was a priority and an important part of coming together each week. They were not devoting themselves to serving one another or ministering to one another but to relating with one another. We share our life with each other because we are part of an eternal family, adopted as sons and daughters of God, through the work of Jesus Christ, and as with any family, the relating proceeds the doing. We still do; we still serve and minister to one another, but we do it through coming to know and understand each other’s needs as we fellowship together.

There are opportunities to get to know the whole congregation, to get to know a few more deeply, and to discover ways to serve along side those who share a similar passion or ministry calling.
